Best Mountain Bike Tracks Perth – Bike Parks

The growing popularity of mountain biking in recent years has seen a significant number of dedicated mountain bike parks pop up all around Perth. From purpose built facilities close to the city, to longer trails in nearby national parks, there’s something for everyone. Here are some of the best dedicated mountain bike parks in Perth, perfect for those times when you want to spend a full day sampling trails.

Kalamunda Mountain Bike Trails

Located just east of Perth airport, or about 40 minutes from the city centre, Kalamunda is one of the most popular mountain biking destinations in Perth. With over 40km of single track trails, there’s something for everyone, from beginner and kid-friendly loops aimed at building confidence on the trail, right through to difficult routes with jumps, log rides and challenging drop offs.

The Kalamunda Mountain Bike collective maintains the trails, and has pulled together a helpful map with loads of suggested loops. Some of these include:

  • The Beginners and Kids Loop. This 5km track starts and finishes at Camel Farm, and should take about 1-2 hours to complete. You start with a warm up lap of the 800m long Shake, Rattle ‘n Roll Skills Track before taking the Camel Train track uphill to get your adrenaline fix on the Black Stump Pump Track. One last uphill push via the smooth Tangaroo Kick trail and then you can enjoy the fun, twisty descent via Gottysnobble.
  • The Three of Spades Loop. Billed as the ultimate test of your skills, this 14km loop combines the area’s three difficult tracks with some of the best intermediate tracks, to deliver 2 hours of heart-pumping fun. Highlights of the loop include: Lancaster – a one way downhill trail full of drop offs, smooth berms, small jumps and ladder drops; Loco en el Coco, which boasts two doubles followed by sharp berms; and Alchemy which offers a wall ride halfway down, and finishes with a tabletop.
  • The Kalamunda Circuit Loop. If you’re after a long, intermediate loop that will surely test your endurance, this 22km circuit has you covered. Starting and finishing at Camel Farm, this loop sees you ascend to the top of Mount Gunjin, before a collection of downhill tracks see you rocket back down to the carpark.

Goat Farm Mountain Bike Park

Alongside Kalamunda, the Goat Farm is a Perth mountain biking institution. Located just on the outskirts of Perth, it was the first mountain bike park in Perth, and is one of the closest to the CBD. It’s located just inside Greenmount National Park, a 4km cycle away from the Midland Train Station.

The park has over 20km of trails, from easy trails through to extreme routes. It might be Perth’s oldest park, but it’s also one of the hardest, with many of the routes leaning to the more challenging side.

The park is perhaps best known for its Skills Area, which gives riders the chance to build their technical skills and get their adrenaline fix on a series of jumps. One entry berm leads to three skills tracks through a rock garden—one Blue track for beginners, and two tracks for experienced riders with rock drops, steep jumps and gap jumps.

Note that the park can get quite hot during the day, with little shade over most of the trails, so it’s best to visit in the cooler months between April and October.

Langford Park

Langford Park in Jarrahdale is 45 minutes drive south east of Perth, known for its more gradual hills and fast, flowing single track. It mostly caters for intermediate riders, but there are two short trails for beginners. One is an access track, but the other—Lovers Lane—offers 1.5km of easy fire trail riding through the forest. Most of the intermediate routes are short and technical numbers, less than 1km in length, but there are a handful of longer routes:

  • Woodley’s Loop is a 4.4km circuit with some easy climbing and fast, free flowing descents. Starting and finishing at the main parking area, it’s great for a quick session before or after work.
  • The Fox is a 4.1km trail through the forest that offers great technical riding.
  • Yellow Brick Road is the park’s longest route at 5.1km. It can be easily combined with Woodley’s Loop and The Fox for a flowing ride across a range of terrain.

Lake Leschenaultia

Located along Rosedale Road in Chidlow and only one hour from Perth’s CBD, Lake Leschenaultia is a beginner mountain bike rider’s paradise. There are nine purpose built mountain bike tracks in the area, covering about 12kms in total. And with an elevation gain of only 50m over 2kms, the Lake offers some of the gentlest ascents around, making it a perfect spot for beginners, and those easing back into the sport after injury.

Some of the most popular trails here include:

  • The Chidlow MTB Trail. This 5km trail is the only one to circle the lake and is specifically designed for beginners. The trail is mostly flat, and mostly follows fire trails, although about one-third is narrow single track. It should take about 40 minutes to complete—depending on how long you spend testing your skills at the beginner-friendly pump track at the start.
  • Shakes n Ladders. Full of man-made features, this track packs in the fun. If you’re after a technical trail to test your ability when it comes to ramps, ladders, hucks and drops, this one’s for you. It’s about 1.3km long and all downhill, but be warned—some of the features can be tricky to roll out of so it’s worth assessing the track before you give it a go.
  • Man vs Machine and Blue Panther combo. If Shakes n Ladders is all about the man-made stuff, this combo of old-school trails pair it right back to basics. Both are light-touch natural single tracks with the odd rock hop and log to traverse. Ride Man vs Machine up, and then treat yourself to the 2.5km Blue Panther to get back down.

Best Mountain Bike Tracks Perth – Standalone Trails

In addition to Perth’s many dedicated bike parks, the city is home to a few standalone mountain bike trails. Some of these that make their way to the list of best mountain bike trails in Perth include:

  • Kwinana Loop Trail – a 21.7km loop located 30 minutes from the Perth CBD that’s been designed for both bushwalkers and mountain bikers. The trail is made from a mixture of concrete, sand, asphalt and crushed limestone, and offers beautiful views of the area’s natural coastal bushland.
  • Mason and Bird Heritage Trail – cycle over Australia’s oldest remaining fully wooden bridge, and past Western Australia’s first dam on this gentle 7km dirt/gravel trail that takes in some of the Perth Hills’ most historic scenery.
  • Forsyth’s Mill – a 6km action-packed single-track trail in the Perth Hills. It’s loved by beginners for the lack of major climbs, but it has enough fast corners and tight turns to satisfy more experienced riders too.
